It is one of Chau Kelley’s earliest memories, and one of the most vivid. Although she was no more than five at the time, Chau remembers the downpour of rain that day. Her mother was wading through the rice paddy, Chau on her back. In one hand she carried a sack of rice; in the other, a bag of vegetables. The two were heading for the home of one of the poorest tenant farmers to deliver this much-needed food. While the journey itself was memorable, what Chau will never forget are the smiles that lit up the faces of the farmer and his family when her mother handed them the food.

A Legacy of Giving
Chau recounts the story as one of the first times she experienced her mother’s extraordinarily generous and caring nature. There were others, such as the time her mother took in a homeless woman and her child. It was the Vietnam War, and Chau’s mother worked hard to support the family. Yet, she never lost her warm and giving spirit. As someone who believes strongly in giving back to her community, Chau carries on her mother’s legacy by striving to make a difference when she touches the lives of others.

Making a Difference
Chau first touched the lives of many when she astonished the directors of a U.S. nonprofit by refusing compensation for the hours of translation and interpreting she had provided them. As Chau saw it, she was helping her friends and neighbors, and that was payment enough. When she arrived in the United States, Chau became actively involved in the local Vietnamese Community, helping other newcomers by working with and without pay as an interpreter while pursuing her Bachelor’s of Science in Business. For more than ten years, Chau has served as a volunteer interpreter whenever she can, and given time and money to a variety of charitable causes. “If I can make a difference, I’ll do it,” she says. In this respect she’s living up to the meaning of her full first name, Bao Chau—which in Vietnamese means “a very valuable pearl.”
